Why is comic verse seen as light verse? Can comic verse be heavier than 'serious verse'? Should comic verse have a strong rhythm and rhyme? Can comic verse foreground strong ideas that allow comedy to issue forth or must comic poems simply state a simple idea so we all get the joke? Should there be a joke? Have you written comic verse and how comic was it?
5 comments latest by Daljit Nagra Shocking news of cut backs to the poetry world By Daljit NagraI was saddened to note the devastating cutbacks imposed on the poetry world as a result of Government policy. Several poetry publishers have either lost all or most of their funding. My particular concern is for the Poetry Book Society of which I am a Board Member. The PBS has lost 100% of its funding and now faces closure. I think it is an important organisation that needs our help. What do you think about the PBS or any other poetry organisations that have suffered cutbacks?
5 comments latest by Radhamani Sarma Translating Poetry to become a better Poet By Daljit NagraI found translating poetry a useful way to develop my writing skills. Translating another poet's work meant I had to learn their mannerisms and attitudes before I could translate their work. This took me out of my comfort zone and when I came back to my own poems I had acquired a slightly new set of styles for writing my poems.
8 comments latest by David Sissons The value of residential poetry courses By Daljit NagraI put off going on one-week residential courses for ages and then when I did finally go I was annoyed with myself for not having gone sooner. I found the intensive stimulus of daily workshops, afternoon one-to-one sessions and evening readings helped to improve my writing skills massively. Have you been on a residential course? Did you find it useful?
5 comments latest by Chris B. Favourite Individual Collections By Daljit NagraI enjoy reading slim volumes of poetry, especially individual collections. I find this an easily manageable thing to carry around with me both physically and mentally. I feel it gives me the transitory workings of a poet's mind and a snapshot of their obsessions at a given point in their life.
6 comments latest by Daljit Nagra Influence By Daljit NagraPoor poets are poor readers of poetry. All good poets wear their influences for all to see. How do we use influence in our writing? What sort of poets do we read and how are we influenced by them? What other non-reading experiences influence your work?
5 comments latest by Ameerah Arjanee Season of Poetry Prizes By Daljit NagraThe major prizes in British poetry are currently being awarded. The Forward Prizes were awarded a couple of months ago, the Costa winner was announced last week and the TS Eliot Prize will be awarded in a fortnight. I wonder what you think about prizes in poetry.
