About the poet

Robert Hull has published five books of poems, two for adults - Encouraging Shakespeare (Peterloo Poets, 1993) and On Portsmouth Station (Beafred, 2008); and three for children - High Tide (Salt Publishing, 2010) following Stargrazer (Hodder, 1997), shortlisted for the Signal prize, and Everest and Chips (OUP, 2002), shortlisted for the CRPE award. A second Beafred collection, Pavarotti of the Sidings, is due out later this year. He has made frequent contributions of original and translated poems to Modern Poetry in Translation.

He has also written fiction and non-fiction for children, and published three books for teachers: The Language Gap (Methuen 1985); Behind the Poem (Routledge, 1988), described in Books for Keeps as ‘one of the best books about children, teaching and writing to appear for a long time’; and the recent Poetry – from Reading to Writing – A Classroom Guide for 7-11 year olds (Routledge, 2009), described in BFK as ‘an essential guide’. He is a regular contributor to educational magazines.
